Description

Something like trying to justify the reapers of mass effect. If someone can read the reason why I am making excuses for them, I will always love that person (maybe a little less. just kidding, is forever).

OVERALL: A high impact, high color piece with vivid imagery, excellent (and creative) use of whitespace as lighting, outstanding balance and curiously unclear intent.

Outstanding use of color, shading, and perspective balance. The hard, geometric shapes of the Reaper forms are counterbalance by whatever the hell those things are being pushed back by their influence. The top of the painting, with roiling red clouds of unknown provenance, gives a heavy, brooding tone that is countered by the blindingly pure light splitting the ether.

All shapes are cleanly done and recognizable. Any shade blurring is intentional and there is even use of shadowing in the appropriate places. The rightmost Reapers tentacles are a touch hastily done and the left one seems to have too many.

As for interpretations, well. I'm not sure what those things are, but they strikingly remind me of the Enslavers from Warhammer 40k, a group of mind-enslaving beings from a higher dimension that nearly wiped out all life. I can only presume the Reapers protect life by pushing back this malign influence and wiping the galaxy clean (hence the white light), preventing them from feeding and growing while saving the most valuable races as Reapers.

The red storm above, however, makes me question this, as it seems to be coming from behind -- is it possible the Reapers themselves are fleeing from something?

Anyway, wonderful piece. Strikingly evocative and highly original.
